Green in Action Honorary Mention
Three Bridges School
Three Bridges, NJ
Students at Three Bridges School in Readington Township, New Jersey took part in a school-wide “Going Green” initiative this year. The goal was to create an environmentally responsible school and help educate the community on how they, too, can be environmentally friendly at home. Students took part in many school-wide Go Green projects that were shared on the school website for the entire community to view. The first project was on Single-Stream Recycling. Working with local township officials, third grade students created a Single-Stream Recycling video that was posted on the school website to inform the community of the township’s new Single Stream Recycling Initiative. Township residents received Single-Stream Recycling containers at their house to use in January. Residents were also informed on how they will receive coupons to local shops and businesses for recycling at home.
Students in first, second and third grade are continuing to take part in the TBS Go Green Tiger Team. Each week, students become lunchroom monitors and helped other students with recycling in the cafeteria. The students wear green bands on their arms to identify themselves as part of the TBS Go Green Tiger Team. They monitor their classmates when they are throwing garbage away and help their classmates with recycling. The students are extremely excited to become part of the Go Green Tiger Team.
The school also had a School-Wide Go Green Essay Contest. Students were invited to write an essay about what they can do to Go Green and help the Earth. Students needed to include the phrase, “Think About It” in their essay. They received many wonderful essays from students on how they are going green at both home and school. All of the essays were published on the school website for all to enjoy. The winners of the essay contest read their essays to the Readington Township Board of Education at a Board of Education meeting in February.
Go Green Reusable Shopping Bags were sold at the winter concert. The profits from the sale of the bags were used to purchase a tiger from the World Wildlife Fund. The tiger is one of the most threatened species on Earth, and the students at Three Bridges School were excited to help protect a tiger and its habitat.
