Building a Model Aquifer

Lesson Description:

Students will ... 
  • Use a model of an aquifer to describe how ground water flows through an aquifer, how ground water can become contaminated, and why it is so difficult to clean contaminated ground water.

Time Needed:
2 to 3 class periods
Materials Needed:
  • Two plexiglass panels
  • Duct tape
  • Lightweight felt
  • Sand
  • Pea gravel
  • Foam weatherstrip
  • Two 6" pcs. tubiing 
  • One 6" pc. tubing
  • Ruler
  • Two dish soap bottles with bottom cut
  • Food coloring - at least three colors
  • Syringe or tap aspirator
  • Cups - 4 oz. paper and large (16 oz.) plastic
