Grow Your Own Fresh Tomato Salsa

Lesson Description:
GrowYourOwnSalsa Students will grow tomatoes, such as the beefsteak variety, onions, cilantro, hot green or red chilies (i.e. jalapeno). After harvesting vegetables and herbs, students will combine ingredients to make their own garden fresh tomato salsa.

Eco-Fact: According to the USDA, if you eat 100 more food calories a day than you burn, you’ll gain about 1 pound in a month. That’s about 10 pounds in a year.

Procedure:
  1. Combine all the ingredients in a bowl. Taste and adjust seasonings if necessary.
  2. Makes: About 2 cups

Adaptations:
Optional: If you and your kids like a spicier salsa, add 1 seeded and finely chopped hot chili pepper (i.e. jalapeno).
Younger students will need help with chopping vegetables and herbs.
