Elementary School Students Create T-Shirt Designs to Celebrate ENERGY STAR’s 20th Birthday
April 17, 2012 – The 2012 Green Energy Challenge, a free GEF program sponsored by National Grid, called on students across New England and New York to submit artwork for the Happy 20th Birthday ENERGY STAR t-shirt design contest. The contest asked students to draw their energy saving wish for 2012.
Hundreds of drawings were submitted from schools across the region and were narrowed down to just eight. Thousands of National Grid employees then voted to determine the winners for each region. Dylan Zhou, a sixth-grade student at Holy Name Parish School in West Roxbury, MA, was chosen as the New England winner. The lucky artist will receive a $250 cash award, and his entire homeroom class will receive t-shirts featuring his winning design. In addition, Dylan will showcase his t-shirt when he throws out the first pitch on April 22 during the National Grid-sponsored Earth Day celebration game at Fenway Park where the Red Sox will face the Yankees.
The winning design is also featured on the t-shirts being worn by hundreds of National Grid employees volunteering at company sponsored Earth Day clean-up events across New England.
“Dylan’s artwork, and those of the other students, are an inspiration to everyone at National Grid. We are proud to showcase his positive message throughout our communities on Earth Day and during our clean-up events,” said Marcy Reed, president, National Grid, Massachusetts. “ENERGY STAR’s 20th birthday is a significant milestone and the fact that kids get excited about it shows great promise for our collective commitment to the environment and saving energy.”
Victoria Waters, CEO at GEF, noted the significance of this year’s contest: “The ENERGY STAR birthday contest and the Green Energy Challenge curriculum and activities created a lot of momentum around the importance of conservation measures. When students understand the basics of sustainability they become even more passionate and curious, leading to long lasting, sustainable lifestyle choices.”
Eileen Cha from Summit Lane Elementary School of Levittown, New York was voted the New York winner, which had a similar contest for that region. Runners-up in the Happy Birthday ENERGY STAR contest are Crystal Rodriguez, Alexa Johnson, Alyssa Panvini, Raffaele Florio, Matthew Keefer, and Joel Aubin.
