2015 National Grid Spotlight Award
Rhode Island Winner: East Greenwich High School
The East Greenwich High School community suffered a loss in 2012 when one of its long term, dedicated and caring staff members was taken too soon. Carrie Maksymowiz’s dedication ran so deep that she continued to work with us even while receiving frequent treatments for her aggressive cancer. Each day, she greeted us with a smile on her face, and spent her limited time doing what she loved, helping others. Her impact not only touched the students and faculty, but grew to affect the larger East Greenwich community and beyond.
To show our appreciation and to honor Mrs. Mac for her hard work and commitment to our school, East Greenwich High School is in the planning phases of creating a “memorial garden” in her honor. On May 3, members of the East Greenwich community and her close family and friends will come together to create this special garden in the courtyard of our high school. The garden will include colorful flowering plants along with tables and benches to allow for all to come relax and enjoy its serenity. In addition, the ceramics students will be making flower pots and members of Best Buddies and Special Education students will be decorating the pots to place around the memorial. Local businesses and citizens throughout Rhode Island are working together to give back to Mrs. Mac, as she had given so much to so many. Although she is no longer with us, this garden will keep her spirited memory alive.
A generous donation from National Grid would not only help us with our vision, but also make a huge impact for the
East Greenwich High School community. Mrs. Mac’s far reaching legacy of caring, hard work and dedication will live on for all to enjoy.
