Stonewall Gardens and Outdoor Science Lab is a non-profit organization that funds the garden program at Stonewall Jackson Elementary School, located in East Dallas, Texas. In the midst of an urban environment, the garden provides an opportunity for hands-on learning, engagement with science concepts, and connections to nature. Besides the local elementary school, the garden also serves the Regional School for the Deaf at Stonewall.
Started 15 years ago as a small plot of beans, the garden today is about 20,000 square feet that includes native plants, a small greenhouse, a pond, chicken coop, and compost area.
The garden serves all grade levels, from kindergarten to fifth grade. Students attend weekly garden classes that are guided by a dedicated science/garden instructor in cooperation with their regular teacher. Sustainability is a theme woven throughout the curriculum to teach students the interconnectedness of our environment and all its elements.
